The latest news from the Old Pauline Club

November 2015 - Old Pauline Newsletter
Welcome to the November issue of the Old Pauline Club eNews.

With just six weeks to Christmas we are busy planning the last few events before the New Year. Bookings for our traditional Christmas Supper Evening have recently launched, so gather a group of your classmates and join us to celebrate the festive season.

There are also OP international branch events happening in Greece, the US and Israel, so check the details below if you are a resident or visiting. Our annual Feast Service at St Paul’s Cathedral, followed by a Reception at the Mercers’ Hall, will take place on 1 February. Please check the website for more details and booking.
The Man Who Drew Winnie-the-Pooh
Ernest Howard Shepard (1932-37) was the renowned illustrator of Winnie-the-Pooh and The Wind in the Willows. At St Paul’s, High Master Fred W Walker had recognised Shepard’s artistic talent at an early stage and encouraged him to take a scholarship to the Royal Academy.

Shepard’s War by James Campbell, published by Michael O’Mara Books, is available at a special discounted price for OPs. The exhibition, E H Shepard: An Illustrator’s War is at the House of Illustration, London until January 2016.
Guild of Mercers' Scholars

Earlier this year four Old Paulines completed their four-year Apprenticeship to their Masters (mentors).

Each became eligible to be admitted to the Freedom of the City of London and also became Guildmen of the Guild of Mercers’ Scholars in two ceremonies in the Chamberlain’s Court Room and subsequently in the Aldermen’s Court Room at Guildhall.
New York Wine Tasting

Paulina Nadia Zilkha presented a tasting of three of her family’s Laetitia Winery wines at OP Robin Hirsch’s Cornelia Street Cafe on a warm rainy late October Wednesday evening. The winery is based on California's Central Coast.

After a splendid Methode Champenoise Brut Rose, they were treated to two of Laetitia Winery’s Pinot Noirs, followed by the Cafe’s own Pinot Noir, also from the Central Coast.

Careers Evening 2015

On 1 October 2015 two Old Paulines returned to the School as part of a Careers Panel organised by two Paulines from the Upper Eighth. One of the organisers, U8th Pauline Rahil Patel said ‘this is the time that careers and universities were at the forefront of our minds.

The speakers included: Tom Adeyoola (1990-95), Ilicco Elia (1984-89), Sir Harold Walker, Thomas Williams and Graham Seel (SPS Head of History).

Proud Witness
David Haney (1956-60), pictured with his wife Sue and two granddaughters, who rowed in the SPS 1st VIII, got in touch to say that he had travelled from Tucson, Arizona to be at the Henley Royal Regatta this year and was impressed with the victorious Princess Elizabeth Cup-winning SPS crew.

“I was terribly proud to wear the OP blazer, especially in a year when St Paul’s won! I was most impressed with how strong and solid the crew looked in the last quarter mile, giving a sense of quite a bit left in the tank."
