The latest news from the Old Pauline Club

July 2016 - Old Pauline Newsletter

Welcome to the July issue of the Old Pauline Club eNews
As another academic year comes to a close, we’d like to thank all of you who have been involved supporting our community. Whether you led on the organisation of a reunion, attended a careers event at St Paul’s, gave advice to a young Old Pauline, were a member of a committee, gave a speech or performed at the Summer Festival, we thank you for making this a memorable year in so many ways.

At the recent Old Pauline Club AGM, President Sir Nigel Thompson described this year as one of development, with a strategic plan to engage younger members and fostering a more robust relationship with the School. Encouragingly, the Club has already seen a 30 per cent increase in attendance at recent events.

The Club is what we all want to make of it. We have new and exciting plans for the coming year and welcome your involvement with these and other ideas you might want to propose.

Finally, we’d like to wish this year's Leavers all the very best with their onward endeavours. Keep in touch, we’re here to help you in any way we can. Look out for our next eNews which comes out in September.

Operation Winthorpe: Update Summer 2016
We committed to keeping OPs updated regarding Operation Winthorpe, the Metropolitan Police investigation into allegations of historical abuse at the School, so that you are aware of any likely developments.  We have not done so for many months, because there has been no news to impart: we are not aware of any new arrests or charges.

Update from Henley

No win this year, but still some quality rowing and a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all. Congratulations to Arthur Doyle for being selected for the U23 GB Team to compete in Rotterdam in August. Arthur’s achievements in rowing since leaving St Paul’s in 2015 have been particularly impressive, as he is one of the youngest members of the men's sweep team! Old Pauline Club Annual Dinner
This year’s Annual Dinner was a convivial affair with 120 OPs and their guests attending a pre-dinner drink in Founders Court before enjoying a three-course meal in the tented dining hall at St Paul’s School, where they heard Lord Winston (1954-59) give an amusing speech about some of his early experiences as a medic, but also deliver a more serious plea, given recent political developments, for education to better inform a public assailed by misinformation.

Scout Reunion 2016
On Sunday 26 June, 34 Old Pauline Scouts, plus a number of their wives and partners, gathered at the delightful riverside home of Harry Hampson.

Amongst attendees, we were delighted to welcome no fewer than three members who were at School in the 1940s.  There were five from the fifties, nine from the sixties, 11 from the seventies and the rest from the final years – the eighties.

The biennial Cotter-Cruickshank lecture, in memory of two legendary classics teachers with combined service of 63 years, spanning between them 1928-73, will be held on Thursday 22 September at the School.
The speaker will be Peter King (1967-71), recently retired from the SPS Classics department, whose topic will be ‘Roman Comedy’. It is hoped that some current Paulines will perform excerpts from one of the plays, and the talk should be accessible to all.
