The latest news from the Old Pauline Club

October 2017 - Old Pauline Newsletter
Welcome to the October issue of the Old Pauline Club eNews

Already into a full and busy autumn term, we are pleased to announce our events programme for the next few months. We hope that you will be able to join us at an event soon. Tickets for the sell-out Feast Service will be on sale from Friday, 13 October, so please book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

The Pauline 2016-17 will begin landing on doormats in the next few weeks and we are pleased to announce that our Interview this year features Nick Hopkins (1981-85), Head of Investigations at
The Guardian.
Welcoming our new VPs

This summer the OPC appointed two new Vice Presidents to its committee, Sir Brian Fall GCVO KCMG (1951-55) and Ian MacDougall (1962-66). Sir Brian is a former British Diplomat who served as High Commissioner to Canada and as Ambassador to Russia. Ian MacDougall spent his career as a successful financial analyst and was a popular Chairman of the OPCC. You can read their full profiles on page 23 of the Old Pauline News in The Pauline.

O Tempora! The Times Crossword

Does The Times Latin Crossword take you back to your time at St Paul’s learning the rigorous grammar, syntax and vocab (your Kennedy might need to be dusted off)? Well, that may be because the author may have helped shape your Latin education as he spent 40 years a Classics teacher at St Paul’s. It has recently been discovered that our own Peter King (1967-71) sets the Latin crossword on Saturday for the paper under the pseudonym ‘Basil’. Basil, of course, referencing βασιλεύς meaning ‘King’.
Correction: John Holder

In last month’s eNewsletter we reported the death of John Holder who attended St Paul’s from 1955-60. John is in fact alive and well and living in Surrey.

We apologise unreservedly for this error and for any distress caused to John, his family, friends and any members of the OP community who know him.

Joe Bannister

Last week we welcomed back Joe Bannister (2003-08) to St Paul’s to talk to GCSE students about Ramona tells Jim, in which Joe plays the male lead ‘Jim’. The play is a dark comedy about confession and young love and the GCSE students attended a showing earlier in the week. The boys had the opportunity to ask Joe many questions about how he prepared for the role, if he still got nervous before the curtain was raised and what he thought happened to the characters after the play finished.
