To mark Remembrance Day, for one night only our Topical Tuesday series will move to Wednesday 11 November. Hosted by the High Master, Graham Seel will present Soldiers and Scholars: Uncovering the Stories of OPs in the Ypres Salient 1914-1918″.

In the Summer Term 2020, St Paul’s Head of Humanities, Graham Seel, was granted a sabbatical in order to uncover the stories of the 88 Old Paulines who fell in the Ypres Salient 1914 – 1918. There he undertook original archival research, along with several tours of the Salient in order to better understand the topography.

This illustrated talk will not only throw light on the stories of some of these Old Paulines, including how and where they fell, but will also demonstrate the processes of research required for this task. The talk will be of interest to those who may be contemplating either researching the story of an ancestor or in assisting the 1WW Research Group as it seeks to uncover the yet-to-be told stories of others among the 490 Old Paulines who fell in the First World War.

Following on from the talk, Graham will be hosting a five-part masterclass examining the research techniques further and how to research the story of your ancestors who fought in the First World War. The masterclass will run for 5 weeks, every Monday from 16 November.
