Ryan Williams (2012-17) is fundraising to build a school in Limpopo, South Africa

Ryan Williams (2012-17) is a second-year Architecture student at the University of Nottingham. As part of his course, a group of students design, fundraise and build an education facility for some of the poorest villages in South Africa. This year, they are building a creche in Lesedi in Limpopo, a village whose current nursery has only two classrooms for 79 children.

The new school that the group have designed to build will incorporate four classrooms (including a nursery), kitchen, office and playground. A borehole will also be installed on site to allow free access to drinking water.

Project Africa has been run successfully by the University of Nottingham’s Department of Architecture and Built Environment for the past 10 years. Working alongside the Thusanang Trust to provide better education to the rural regions of South Africa, the University has been influential in improving educational infrastructure in the northern region of the country, whilst also providing its students with construction experience.

All donations will be used to fund the actual construction of the building; 95% of all funds are spent within 50km of the site including materials and supplies. The team will fly out over the Easter Holidays to complete the build, with construction lasting four weeks.

The school already has established links with education in sub-Saharan Africa so it is great to see some of our alumni strengthening these ties. In 2018, a group of our pupils went to Zambia with the charity Beyond Ourselves which works alongside three community schools in the country, bringing essential aid to orphans and vulnerable young children in these communities. The boys remarked on what an inspiring trip this had been, we hope Ryan has a similar experience in South Africa this Easter.

If you’d like to help Ryan in his fundraising efforts, please donate through the JustGiving page. Feel free to email him for further details on the trip.
