SPS Leavers Too Good For Class of 2015

The last Saturday before Christmas saw the annual match between a St Paul's School 'Leavers XV' and a team from the 'Class of 2015' put together by James O'Byrne and Blake Fontaine.

On a warm December morning at Thames Ditton, the crowd was treated to an exciting game of running rugby. A lack of front-row options in the School team resulted in uncontested scrums and took away one of the traditional advantages of the 'senior' team. This meant that the St Paul's team could user their superior fitness and regularly practiced skills to score some fine tries.

The SPS team raced into a 26-0 lead in the first half with tries from Mungo Russell, Robbie Fraser, Will Cole and Ben Cullen. But then the Old Boys hit back with two tries of their own. The first scored by Adam Goodbody came from a well-executed line-out drive and the second by George Mayo from a quickly taken line-out throw which may or may not have gone the required 5 metres, but went far enough to satisfy the referee who by now was entering into the spirit of the contest! Both tries were converted by James O'Byrne and half time came with the score at 26-14 in the School's favour.

Despite gaining more territory in the second half, the Old Boys team could not force a score. They were also disrupted when centre Chagall Caprez injured his collarbone and was forced to leave the field. Soon afterwards the School team broke away and Chris Bell scored a fine individual try. A sixth try added gloss to the final score line and the match ended 40-14 in the School's favour.

Thanks to James Blurton and Glenn Harrison at SPS for bringing the team to Thames Ditton and to all the Old Boys who played.  We look forward to seeing many of the players back in Old Pauline Club colours in the future.
