Secrets of the Old City: Walking Tour

12 MARCH 2022

2:00pm

Tower Hill Station

We are delighted to share that James Ferguson, OP 1984-89, will be hosting a walking tour of the City of London, exploring the Secrets of the Old City and its intrinsic connection to St Paul’s School and its Alumni.

The tour will take place on Saturday 12 March at 2pm. The meeting point is at the exit to Tower Hill station at the ‘Tower Hill Tram’ coffee stand, just by the ‘Citizen M’ hotel. Please bring sensible shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.

About the Walk
On the tour, you will pass by the historic sites that everyone knows and loves, such as the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral, as well as heading off the beaten track, following the medieval street plan to see hidden gardens and lost reminders of the rich Roman and medieval past of London.

You’ll learn about centuries of history, but also about the present-day City and how this tiny geographical area has become so important to our economy and to global financial markets. You’ll also discover why the City of London has its own mayor, its own police force and its own bizarre and arcane traditions, including marching sheep across London Bridge and flipping pancakes on the site of the Roman Amphitheatre!

About James
James Ferguson is a qualified and experienced London Guide. He holds the Blue Badge, which is the highest level of guiding qualification in the UK: it requires two years of study and entitles him to guide all over London and the Southeast.

James attended St Paul’s in the late 80s, and went on to study Modern Languages at Trinity College Cambridge. He has spent the last twenty years working in tourism, firstly as a tour manager accompanying adults and teenagers on tours all over Europe and more recently as an expert guide here in London. His company offers private and group tours all over London as well as in Bath, Stratford, and Oxford. James still lives in West London with his family. He has fond memories of his time at the school and has retained many close friendships with other Old Paulines.
